MOT Testing

The MOT test is a legal safety inspection that checks a vehicle against DVSA standards at the time of the test. It helps ensure your vehicle is safe, roadworthy and compliant with emissions regulations.

We carry out MOT tests carefully and fairly, and we are always happy to explain the results.

How MOT defects are recorded

During an MOT some of the items we check include (but are not limited to):

  • brakes, steering and suspension
  • lights, indicators and visibility
  • tyres and wheels
  • seatbelts and other safety systems
  • structure and corrosion
  • emissions (where applicable)

If something does not meet the required standard, it will be recorded as:

Dangerous – a serious issue; the vehicle should not be driven until repaired
Major – a defect serious enough to cause an MOT failure
Minor – not serious enough to cause a fail, but should be repaired when possible

Advisory notes may also be recorded for items that are acceptable at the time of test but may need attention in the future.

Vehicles are tested as presented

MOT testing is carried out in the condition the vehicle is presented.

Please ensure that:

  • the vehicle is reasonably clean inside and out
  • items are removed from the driver’s view (sat-navs, dash-cams, hanging objects, etc.)
  • child seats and other items are removed or adjusted where necessary so that seat belt checks can be completed

This helps the inspection to be carried out safely and may prevent refusal to test where access or visibility is obstructed.

MOT test classes & typical vehicle types

We follow DVSA test classes. The most common classes we see are:

  • Class 1 & 2 – motorcycles
  • Class 3 – small three-wheeled vehicles
  • Class 4 – most cars and light vehicles up to 3,000kg
  • Class 7 – vans between 3,000kg and 3,500kg

If you are unsure which class your vehicle falls into, just ask and we will confirm it for you.

Current MOT test prices

Our MOT pricing is set fairly and always remains within the DVSA maximum test fee.

Current test fees:

  • Class 1, 2 & 3: £25
  • Class 4 & 7: £50
  • Retest (where applicable): £10

For details on how our pricing works across other services, visit our
Pricing & Charges page.

Retests

If your vehicle does not pass its MOT, repairs will be needed before a pass certificate can be issued.

We will explain:

  • what needs repairing
  • whether it is safety-critical
  • what your retest options are

Repairs can usually be carried out through our
Servicing & Repairs service.

Important note

An MOT is a snapshot of the vehicle’s condition on the day of the test.
Passing an MOT does not guarantee that faults will not develop later, and it does not confirm the condition of items that are not part of the MOT test.

If your MOT is due soon, or you are unsure when it expires, please
contact us and we’ll be happy to check.
