About the MOT Test

The MOT test is a legal safety inspection that checks your vehicle against DVSA standards at the time of the test. It helps ensure the vehicle is safe, roadworthy and compliant with emissions regulations where applicable.

We carry out MOT tests carefully and fairly, and we are always happy to explain the results in plain English.

What We Check

• Brakes, steering and suspension
• Lights, indicators and visibility
• Tyres and wheels
• Seatbelts and other safety systems
• Structure and corrosion
• Emissions (where applicable)
• Windscreen, wipers and washers
• Horn and mirrors

How Defects Are Recorded

If something does not meet the required standard, it will be recorded as one of the following:

• Dangerous — a serious issue; the vehicle should not be driven until repaired
• Major — a defect serious enough to cause an MOT failure
• Minor — not serious enough to cause a failure, but should be monitored and repaired when possible

Advisory notes may also be recorded for items that pass at the time of test but may need attention in the future.

Vehicle Classes We Test

• Class 1 & 2 — motorcycles and mopeds
• Class 3 — small three-wheeled vehicles
• Class 4 — most cars and light vehicles up to 3,000kg
• Class 7 — vans and goods vehicles between 3,000kg and 3,500kg

Preparing Your Vehicle

To help the inspection run smoothly, please ensure the vehicle is reasonably clean inside and out, any items are removed from the driver's view (sat-navs, dash-cams, hanging items), and child seats or other items that could obstruct seat belt checks are removed or adjusted. A vehicle may be refused testing if access or visibility is obstructed.

If Your Vehicle Fails

We'll explain clearly what needs repairing, whether any items are safety-critical, and what your retest options are. Repairs can usually be carried out through our Servicing & Repairs service, and a retest is available at £10 where applicable.

Important Note

An MOT is a snapshot of the vehicle's condition on the day of the test. Passing an MOT does not guarantee that faults will not develop later, and it does not confirm the condition of items that fall outside the scope of the test.
